Coconut Water: Miracle or Myth?

Drinking coconut water is the new food fad following in the steps of the pomegranate and the acai berry. Sales in the U.S. and Europe doubled to more than $265 million last year and the upward trend still seems to be going. The clear liquid, found inside a young, green coconut has been praised for all kinds of health benefits and is considered to be the new “natural” sports and energy drink. So is coconut water really all that it’s cracked up to be? Well it turns out that it does have the following benefits:

Low calories, no fat, no cholesterol

Re-hydration benefits

Full of important electrolytes (particularly potassium)

Some studies have shown that it can help reduce blood pressure and cholesterol levels

It should be noted that not enough strong studies have been conducted on coconut water to support greater claims. As a sports drink, coconut water does help with rehydration and regulating electrolyte levels after an intense workout. All in all, there is no doubt that coconut water has beneficial qualities, but good ol’ regular water is always in style and does your body just fine.
