Oscar de la Renta: Designing Dreams

Oscar de la Renta is one of the fashion industry’s most recognized names. A native of the Dominican Republic, he went to Spain at the age of 18 to study painting, and developed an interest in fashion. He started sketching for some of Spain’s leading fashion houses, and eventually became an apprentice to Cristóbal Balenciaga, a famous couturier. Under him, Oscar de la Renta dedicated himself to the study of fashion.

Afterwards, he went to Paris to further his career and joined Antonio Castillo at the illustrious house of Lanvin as a couture assistant. His next step was to head to New York where he started designing couture for Elizabeth Arden. In the process, his name started to gain more recognition. Finally in 1965, Oscar de la Renta opened his own fashion house, and his renowned ready-to-wear label came into existence. In 1967 and 1968, de la Renta was honored with the Coty American Fashion Critics’ Award.

Since then, Oscar de la Renta’s name has continued to grow in fame as he has become one of the leading fashion designers of his time. His label has expanded to include accessories like sunglasses, handbags, jewelry, and fragrances.  He also started La Casa del Niño, an orphanage and school for children in La Romana.

He has dressed celebrities and royalty, and his evening gowns always stand out on the red carpet. I love the timeless elegance of his collections, and the way he combines color with subtle, feminine details to create a chic final piece. See some of the beautiful pieces from his collections below!

Sincerely, Saba
